If Dunn’s River Falls is the famous one, Blue Hole is the secret one. No ticket booth. No tourist infrastructure. No human chain of cruise ship passengers shuffling up terraced limestone. Just turquoise water, jungle, rope swings, and you.
I send adventurous guests here at least twice a month. Every single one comes back saying the same thing: this was the highlight of the trip. Not Dunn’s River. Not Mystic Mountain. This. A hidden swimming hole in the hills that most visitors never find because it is not in the resort brochures.
This guide covers everything you need to know before you go. Honest. Detailed. From someone who has been there dozens of times.

What Is Blue Hole Jamaica?
Blue Hole is a natural limestone sinkhole and waterfall system fed by underground springs in the hills above Ocho Rios. The water is turquoise because of the mineral content in the limestone rock. Multiple pools connect through small waterfalls and cascades, creating a series of natural swimming areas at different levels.
The site goes by several names: Blue Hole, Island Gully Falls, Secret Falls, Cool Blue Hole, and Irie Blue Hole. They are all the same place. The name you hear depends on which guide or tour operator you book with. The official name on most maps is Island Gully Falls, but everyone in Ocho Rios calls it Blue Hole.
Unlike Dunn’s River Falls or Mystic Mountain, Blue Hole is not a managed park with ticket booths, changing rooms, and gift shops. It is a natural site with local guides who operate independently. That rawness is exactly what makes it special. You are swimming in nature, not a theme park.
How Much Does Blue Hole Cost in 2026?
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Entry with local guide | $15-25 per person |
| Tour from hotel (with transport) | $40-80 per person |
| Water shoes (if buying locally) | $10-15 |
| Guide tip | $5-10 per person |
The price varies because there is no single operator. Multiple local guides work the entrance. Some charge $15, others charge $25. The experience is essentially the same regardless of who you pay. If you are staying at an Areca Homes villa, Owner Stacy-Ann can connect you with a trusted guide at a fair price.
- PRO TIP: Do not book an expensive tour package from your hotel. They charge $60-80 for the same thing you can do for $15-25 by driving yourself or having Stacy-Ann arrange a driver. The tour markup pays for the bus, not the experience.
What to Expect at Blue Hole (Step by Step)
You drive about 20 minutes south from the coast into the hills. The road narrows. Lush jungle closes in on both sides. You park at a clearing near the entrance where guides greet you.
Your guide walks you down a short trail through tropical vegetation to the first pool. The water hits you immediately. It is turquoise. Impossibly, almost artificially blue. But it is not artificial. The color comes from limestone minerals and the way sunlight refracts through the clear water.
From there, you move between pools connected by small cascades and waterfalls. Your guide shows you the rope swings, the cliff jumping spots at different heights, and the natural waterslide carved into the rock. There is a small waterfall you can stand under, a cave-like overhang, and a deeper pool for swimming.
The whole circuit takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on how long you swim, how many jumps you do, and how many photos you take. There are no time limits. You leave when you are done.
Cliff Jumping at Blue Hole: Heights and Safety
5 feet (beginner): A small ledge just above the water. Perfect for first-timers and anyone testing their nerve. Almost everyone does this one.
10-15 feet (intermediate): The most popular jump height. High enough to feel the rush, low enough that almost anyone can do it. This is where most visitors spend their time.
20-25 feet (advanced): The high platforms. Only attempt if you are comfortable with heights and a strong swimmer. Your guide will check the water depth before you jump. Do NOT jump without a guide confirming it is safe.
The natural waterslide is a smooth limestone chute that drops you into a pool below. It moves fast. Cross your arms over your chest and keep your feet forward. Your guide will demonstrate first.
- PRO TIP: Do not jump from any platform your guide has not approved. Water depth changes with rainfall and season. What was safe last week might not be safe today. Listen to your guide.
What to Wear and Bring to Blue Hole
Wear: Swimsuit, closed-toe water shoes with grip (essential on wet limestone), quick-dry clothing.
Bring: Waterproof phone case, cash for entry and tip, reef-safe sunscreen, towel, change of clothes for after.
Leave behind: Expensive jewelry, loose sandals (they will come off in the water), heavy bags. There are no lockers. Leave valuables in your vehicle or villa.
Water shoes are non-negotiable. The rocks are slippery with algae in spots, and the trail between pools crosses wet limestone. Bare feet or flip-flops are a recipe for slipping. You can buy water shoes at the Ocho Rios craft market for $10-15 or bring them from home.
Best Time to Visit Blue Hole
Morning between 8AM and 11AM. Fewer visitors, cooler temperatures, and the best light for photos. The sunlight hits the water at an angle in the morning that makes the turquoise color even more vivid.
Avoid midday on cruise ship days. Some tour operators bring groups from the ships, and the pools get crowded. Tuesday and Wednesday are the busiest cruise days in Ocho Rios. Monday and Thursday are quietest.
Season matters less here than at the beaches. The pools are spring-fed and shaded by jungle, so the water temperature stays cool year-round. After heavy rain, the water flow increases and the pools can get murkier. Wait a day after a heavy downpour for the clearest conditions. Check our guide on best times to visit Ocho Rios attractions

Dunn’s River Falls: 15 minutes north. $25 adults. Jamaica’s most famous waterfall. 180-foot-tall terraced limestone you climb with a guide.
Konoko Falls: 10 minutes. $20 adults. Gentler waterfall with botanical gardens and a Taino museum. Best for families with younger kids.
Turtle River Falls: 15 minutes. $18. Small, peaceful waterfall. Good for a quiet afternoon.

Is Blue Hole Safe?
Blue Hole is moderately safe with a competent guide. It is less structured than the managed parks (Dunn’s River, Mystic Mountain), which means more personal responsibility. The rocks are slippery. The cliff jumping heights are real. The water depth varies with season and rainfall.
Use a guide. They know which pools are deep enough for jumping on any given day, which rocks are slippery, and how to use the rope swing safely. They do this every day. You do not.
Wear water shoes. Do not jump from any height your guide has not approved. Do not swim alone. Keep children closely supervised. These are common-sense precautions, not warnings designed to scare you. Thousands of visitors enjoy Blue Hole safely every year. Read our full Jamaica safety guide
