Most visitors come to Jamaica for the beaches and waterfalls. Fair enough. But some of the best stories on this island are underground.

Green Grotto Caves has sheltered the Taino people, hidden Spanish settlers fleeing the English, concealed runaway slaves seeking freedom, stored rum barrels during World War II, and appeared in a James Bond film. All of that happened inside one cave system, 25 minutes from our Areca Homes villas in Drax Hall Country Club and Fairway Estate.

I am Stacy-Ann, Owner of Areca Homes. I send guests here when they want something different from the usual Dunn’s River Falls and beach day routine. Takes about an hour. Costs $20. And every single person comes back saying the same thing: “Why is nobody talking about this place?”

This guide answers that question and everything else you need to know.

What Are Green Grotto Caves?

Green Grotto Caves is a series of interconnected limestone caverns on Jamaica’s north coast in Discovery Bay. The cave system contains two main chambers: Runaway Cave (the largest) and Green Grotto Cave. Inside, you find thousands of stalactites hanging from the ceiling, stalagmites rising from the floor, ceiling pockets, narrow passageways, and an underground lake that stretches over 1,500 metres.

The caves have had at least five different names over the centuries: Runaway Bay Caves, Cave Hall Caves, Discovery Bay Caves, Dry Harbour Caves, and Rum Caves. Each name tells part of the story.

The site is managed by the St. Ann Development Company on behalf of the Urban Development Corporation. It earned Green Globe 21 Certification in 2003 and platinum-status certification in 2009 for environmental and sustainability standards. An underground tunnel links the caves to the beach in Runaway Bay, historically used as an escape route. Explore more things to do near Ocho Rios

The History Inside Green Grotto Caves

This is what sets Green Grotto apart from any other cave tour in the Caribbean. The history runs deep. Literally and figuratively.

The Taino People: Jamaica’s original indigenous inhabitants used these caves for shelter and ceremonies long before Europeans arrived. Your guide will point out areas where evidence of Taino presence has been found.

Spanish Hideout (1600s): When the English invaded Jamaica in 1655, Spanish settlers fled into these caves to hide. The underground tunnel to Runaway Bay beach was their escape route to the coast, where ships could carry them to Cuba.

Runaway Slaves: Enslaved people escaping plantations used these caves as hiding places. The name “Runaway Bay” itself traces back to this history. The darkness and complexity of the cave system made it nearly impossible for pursuers to follow.

WWII Rum Storage: During World War II, the Jamaican government used the cave entrance as a storeroom for rum barrels. That is how the name “Rum Caves” stuck.

Arms Smuggling: Between the World Wars, smugglers used the caves to run arms to Cuba through the underground tunnel and out to waiting boats.

James Bond: The 1973 James Bond film Live and Let Die used Green Grotto Caves as a filming location. Roger Moore navigating those underground passages? You were looking at these caves

Your guide covers all of this during the one-hour tour. The good guides do voices, crack jokes, and make the history come alive. Ask for Chedd if he is working that day.

What to Expect on the Green Grotto Caves Tour

Every visit is a guided tour. No self-guided exploration. You get a protective helmet at the entrance and your guide leads a group through the cave system for about one hour.
The tour moves through two main sections. Runaway Cave comes first, the largest chamber, with well-lit pathways and colored lights that highlight the rock formations. Stalactites hang from the ceiling like stone chandeliers. Stalagmites rise from the floor. Some formations have been growing for thousands of years.
Then you descend toward the underground lake inside Green Grotto Cave. The steps down are steep in places. The lake itself is worth the entire visit. Over 1,500 metres long, roughly 12 metres deep, illuminated by atmospheric lighting that makes the water glow. This is the moment everyone reaches for their phone.
The walk is at a comfortable pace with frequent stops for explanations and photos. You do not need to be in peak physical shape. Visitors with plantar fasciitis and minor mobility issues report managing the tour without problems. The caves are not wheelchair accessible though, and the steps to the lake can be challenging for anyone with serious knee or hip issues.

Bats live in the caves. They are present but not overwhelming. They tend to stay put while tour groups pass through. Worth knowing if bats bother you. If they do not, you will barely notice them.

What to Wear to Green Grotto Caves

  • Wear: Closed-toe shoes with good grip. Sneakers or hiking shoes work best. The cave floor is uneven and can be damp in spots. Comfortable casual clothes that you do not mind getting slightly dirty. The caves maintain a cool temperature inside, so a light layer helps.
  • Leave behind: Flip-flops (you will not be turned away, but you will regret it on the steps). Food and drinks cannot go inside the caves. Snacks are available at the front desk before or after.
  • Bring: Your phone for photos (the underground lake is incredibly photogenic). Cash for snacks and souvenirs. Bug spray for the garden area. Helmets are provided by the park.

Best Time to Visit Green Grotto Caves

The caves are open daily from 9AM to 4PM. Arrive in the morning between 9 and 11 AM for the shortest wait and smallest group sizes. Tour buses from cruise ships and Montego Bay resorts tend to arrive after 11 AM.

Unlike Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain, Green Grotto does not get nearly as overwhelmed on cruise ship days. It sits further from the Ocho Rios cruise port, about 30 minutes west, so fewer day-trippers make the trip. Mornings are still quieter though.

December through April (dry season) is the most comfortable time to visit. The caves stay cool year-round, but the garden area and drive are more pleasant in dry weather.
